Counseling and psychotherapy
My approach to each client is customized and based on specific needs, and draws on different therapeutic traditions and techniques. These may include:
- psychodynamic – looking at close early relationships and issues;
- cognitive-behavioral therapy – untangling connections between distressing thoughts, feelings and behaviors;
- mindfulness – drawing on time-tested mind-body practices such as meditation that neuroscience has increasingly validated;
- and others.
The office where I see clients is conveniently located in Chicago near the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive. That’s just south of the Chicago River – above the Chicago Blackhawks store (pure coincidence).
My fees for psychotherapy are competitive and somewhat flexible, depending in part on one’s ability to pay. I also accept Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO insurance.
I regularly work in conjunction with psychiatrists if a client and I, after some discussion, feel that drug therapy may be called for. Some folks are reluctant to take psychoactive medications, and I understand and respect that. But it’s always worth talking about.
Speaking and writing
I am also available for talks and presentations on a number of subjects related to behavioral science. In the past, I’ve done multimedia presentations on psychopathology and creativity, looking at artists from Van Gogh to Kurt Cobain; the challenges of dual diagnosis; and education on addiction, mental health and illness.
